Abstract

In both domestic and international assessments, achievement in mathematics and science has been consistently low for Thai students. Improving the competency and effectiveness of mathematics and science teachers is essential, as teachers are a direct link to students and their academic success. On the global stage, many Asian countries have performed exceptionally well in assessments such as the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). They differ from Thailand in the cultures of their educational systems. One common thread in the approaches employed by these top-performing countries is in the application of professional development and the use of coaching to maintain a high standard for their teachers. Coaches can help teachers deepen their understanding of content and improve their techniques in practice. This paper, through literature review, first explores the context for teaching the subjects of mathematics and science and then examines documented academic implementations of coaching to synthesize the reasons why instituting a well-defined coaching system can help sustain a professional level of quality in teachers. Evidence makes clear that teachers not only transfer knowledge to students; they influence the ways their students learn, their perspectives on education and their study habits. It is the high standard of teachers, more than other factors, that will lead to enhanced understanding and improved achievement for students and coaching is a viable means through which to attain such a standard in teachers.
